very good history of the letterform and bibliography.... We will begin where civilisation began, meander through the Middle Ages, race through the Renaissance, and in doing so discover where our alphabet originated, how and why it evolved, and why, for example, an A looks, well, like an A.

In the past twelve months, directing commercials for Apple, VW, Toyota, Jeep, Target, Vodafone, Coca-Cola, Pepsi and EA Sports, Brand New School has worked with agencies such as Arnold Worldwide, Wieden+Kennedy, TBWA\Chiat\Day, DDB and JWT. The company has also helmed viral ads for VW, Budweiser, and Adidas. On the music video front, BNS’ clips for The Polyphonic Spree and Muse each earned MVPA nominations with Muse “Hysteria” taking home the MVPA for Best Visual Effects of 2005. July 2nd was Swiss designer Karl Gerstner’s 80th birthday. While Josef Müller-Brockman may enjoy status as the most well-known Swiss graphic designer, Gerstner’s impact in design and advertising places him as a pioneer in the field. His work in the 1960’s for companies like Geigy or Citroën established many of the conventions and approaches designers still use today. Read More.

Those of you who have had me as a professor know my dislike of Optima but that doesn't mean I don't think Herman Zapf is great (and I love Melior)... Back in the 1960’s and 70’s Hermann did several exclusive typefaces for Hallmark Cards. As a side project, Hallmark commissioned a video of Hermann explaining the basics of calligraphy and how he worked. This short but insightful film is perfect to wet the appetite of aspiring calligraphers. read more
